Renewable energy advancements

The renewable energy landscape in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire is seeing significant advancements with several new projects and initiatives.

At the end of 2022, Yorkshire and the Humber region had the highest renewable energy capacity in England. Regional Renewables 2022

It has since been surpassed by the South East but several large projects in the pipeline mean the region will continue to be a powerful and important player in the UK renewable energy industry for the foreseeable future.

Dogger Bank Offshore Wind Farm

One of the most notable projects is the Dogger Bank Wind Farm, set to be the largest offshore wind farm in the world. The farm is being developed in three phases, Dogger Bank A, B and C, and is located on an isolated sandbank 130km off the North East coast of England. The turbines are some of the largest in the world, with each blade measuring 107m long, which is twice the wingspan of the Angel of the North! The farm will eventually be capable of powering up to 6 million homes annually. (Dogger Bank)

Yorkshire Water

At a more local level, Yorkshire Water is making substantial strides in its renewable energy initiatives. The company has received planning approval to install solar panels at eight of its sites across the region. These installations are part of a larger plan to equip 28 locations with solar panels. The first phase, set to be operational by summer 2024, is anticipated to generate about 4% of Yorkshire Water’s annual power needs. This move is aligned with the company’s goal to achieve carbon net zero by 2030, demonstrating a significant commitment to reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources (Energy Live News).

Temple Oaks Renewable Energy Park

Another exciting development is the Temple Oaks Renewable Energy Park near Grantham. Ridge Clean Energy has plans to utilize land for solar energy production, with a 250MW solar farm and 400MWh Battery Energy Storage System planned for the area. The project is still at the pre-application stage but would bring an enormous increase in renewable energy production to the area. This project aims not only to produce renewable energy but also to enhance local biodiversity, providing long-term ecological and economic benefits to the community. (Ridge Clean Energy).
